Turtle nesting season is back on Grand Cayman and this year, a new project in conjunction with the Department of Environment will watch the nests even closer than in previous years.

Starting July 1st for four months, security cameras will be watching “Turtle Beach” on Sand Hole Road 24/7 in an effort to catch any poachers, as well as track the nesting turtles. Project planner Mike Ridley said, “By monitoring the beach, we can see precisely how many turtles are nesting there and ensure that their nests are safe.”

Conservation efforts have brought green turtles back from extinction, but the population is still limited so we’re excited to see this new initiative. To read the full article on the planned turtle surveillance, please click here.

Here at Aqua Bay we’ve been fortunate to have turtles nest on our beach, so please exercise caution on the beach! We’re proud to have turtle friendly lighting so as not to disorient turtles, and we appreciate your participation in safeguarding our friends from the sea.
